MLB.com's 2010 Fantasy Baseball Preview

I was taken by surprise today when checking out MLB.com, like I do every day, to see a new fantasy baseball preview featuring today's players in none other than the classic 1987 Topps card design. Interestingly though, Topps logo isn't anywhere to be seen. Yeah MLB is MLB but.. does anyone happen to be a lawyer? Not important. Anyways, the webpage appears to be a great resource with stats, projected stats, rankings and more! Check it out.

Blaster Break: 2009 Topps 206 Baseball

You know.. when my wife goes grocery shopping and I specifically ask for a pack of 206.. look what I end up with! A freakin' blaster! Jeez..

This will be a short and simple blaster break post... I only wanted a pack!

I already got a Mize which I showed in a different post, but this is the short print!
..hence the no-numbered back.

Here's the bronzes.

...and the minis.

If you're wondering why all the cards have stains on the back, they're printed like that on purpose.

Ok, now I think I have enough to post a want list. It should be up shortly.

Pack Break: 2009 Topps National Chicle Football

Didn't these come out a long time ago? This is the first time I've seen them for sale here so I grabbed one of the brightly colored, alluring packs. I like 'em enough to get more but I won't be spending too much on these.

This guy really seems to be on his way up... way up. He started out as an undrafted signing for the Giants. He never got past the practice squad in '05 and was severely injured in a non-sports related accident in '06 and almost bled to death. He was traded to Green Bay for a sixth-round draft pick and has been on fire ever since. He already holds the Packers franchise records for most rushing TD's (3) and most rushing yards (201) in a playoff game.

D'Qwell led the NFL in tackles in 2008. His '09 season was cut short by an injury in game six.

Taking over the Steelers starting runningback position in 2006 from Jerome Bettis, he's earned 2 rings in Superbowl XL and XLIII. Last year, after recovering from a brief injury, he lost his starting spot to Rashard Mendenhall.

Another Packer! Donald now holds the franchise record for most TD receptions and obviously was a huge part in helping Brett Favre earn his records for most TD's, completions, passing yards.. but hopefully not the interceptions one.

A nice looking Youngsters of the Gridiron insert. Knowshon wears the Broncos number 27 of the late Darrent Williams which he asked permission from Darrent's mother to wear with one condition, that he volunteer a couple of hours per month at the Darrent Williams Teen Center.

And of course the standard mini parallel which now come in every single retro set. I can't wait for 2036 Topps Heritage Baseball so I can get my Ken Griffey III mini surgeon general warning back!

No government stuff here.. wait a minute.. what the heck is this?

Card of the Day: 2010 Topps baseball #80b Christy Mathewson SP

My first short print out of '10 Topps! Considering I didn't pull a single short-print out of all the '09 Topps I opened, this is bliss for me.

That last line of stats caught my interest so I had to investigate. Mathewson pitched his entire career for the Giants until he was traded to the Reds on July 20, 1916. His 1 and only outing for the Reds, the second game in a double header on September 4, was billed as the final showdown between two of the biggest names in baseball, Christy Mathewson and Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown. It must have been quite a show! Mathewson came away with a complete game win, giving up 8 runs to the Cubs giving up 10. It was one of the highest scoring games of the year for both teams.

Card of the Day: 2010 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes 20th Anniversary #BHA-10 Chipper Jones

While most of my 1 pack's worth of first impression of 2010 Upper Deck is pretty negative, one thing I like is the resurfacing of the Heroes brand as an insert set! I was actually hoping this would happen, just like I'm hoping for Stadium Club 20th Anniversary inserts in 2011 Topps. While the front of the card looks nothing like any past Heroes set I've seen, the backs are basically identical to the latest baseball version minus the logos.
